Spring

geese stand on thin ice
grey river reflects grey sky
spring is elusive

Finally we getting warmer days so that the piles of snow we still have lying around can melt.  Spring is late again this year.  I need the warmth and sunshine to melt the end of winter blahs in my soul.  Apparently in some places spring has been coming earlier, but not here.

A number of cultures start their year in spring – for example in Persian and Hindu traditions.  It makes sense to me that spring is a new beginning; we take deeper breaths and imagine new possibilities.  The earth axis tilts toward the sun the way that flowers do as they grow.  I don’t really understand why the earth’s tilt changes with the seasons, though I think it has something to do with the fact that the earth isn’t perpendicular to start with.  One of the mysteries of life.

I may be able to sit on my deck soon because it’s south facing and always much warmer than any other area around my house – in fact, I just stepped out there in bare feet and no coat, so it is warm enough, though perhaps not to stay out too long.  I still have big piles of snow in my back yard, though it is melting – a small patch of dirt and some grass is showing.

The Canada geese are definitely back on the river, though I haven’t seen pelicans yet.  I think they arrive closer to the second week of April – that’s a sure sign of spring here.

One of my friends recently said, “Now we can breathe.”  It’s true that there’s something about spring sunshine and air that makes you want to take deep breaths and expands your soul.

I want to think of possibilities, believe that wonderful things can happen.
